2026年 京都・祇園祭の滞在エリア完全ガイド

The Gion Festival takes place over the entire month of July, and where you stay will determine whether you experience the elegant spectacle of watching the float procession from a rooftop or the struggle to push your way through the crowds starting at 6 AM. Here, we’ll thoroughly explain recommended areas to stay near the heart of the festival and key points to consider when choosing accommodation, so you can make the most of this iconic Japanese festival.

What is the Gion Festival? Why is hotel location so important?

The Gion Festival is one of Japan’s three great festivals, alongside the Tenjin Festival in Osaka and the Kanda Festival in Tokyo. It has a history dating back to 869 and is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. In July, Kyoto is vibrant with numerous events, including Shinto rituals, ceremonies, and processions of floats, centered around Yasaka Shrine.

However, there’s an important point that many travel guides don’t mention. In fact, the main event of the Gion Festival doesn’t take place in the Gion area itself.

The Yamahoko procession and Yoiyama (evening festival) take place on the west side of the Kamo River, in central Kyoto, mainly along Shijo and Karasuma streets. In other words, what’s truly important when choosing accommodation isn’t “being close to Yasaka Shrine,” but rather “having good access to the Shijo and Karasuma area.”

Main dates for the Gion Festival in 2026

Yoiyama (18:00-23:00) is a special time when the central streets of Kyoto are closed to traffic, and you are enveloped in the magical lights of the floats, the food stalls, and the sounds of Gion Hayashi music. Make your accommodation reservations as early as possible. July is the peak tourist season in Kyoto, and it is not uncommon for accommodations within walking distance of the Shijo area to be fully booked months in advance.

The most important rule when choosing accommodation for the Gion Festival: “Walking distance” is more important than “Riding.”

During the peak days of the Gion Festival, all vehicle traffic, including taxis and buses, is prohibited around Shijo Street and Karasuma Street. Even hotels that seem convenient on a map will be quite difficult to access on July 15th, 16th, 23rd, and 24th if you plan to take a taxi to the float area.

Ideally, you should look for accommodation within a 10-15 minute walk from the Shijo-Karasuma intersection. Particularly recommended are hotels in central Kyoto’s Nakagyo Ward, the Gion area, or those near Kyoto Station, which are easily accessible by subway.
