International creatives will find our residence perfectly suited to longer stays as a home base while continuing work on their ongoing projects at home, while connecting with new partners and developing new projects in Kyoto
The lounge and coworking space next door is equipped with local craft coffee and tea, as well as local craft beer and spirits, and is an excellent location for both work meetings and informal gatherings after the workday is done.
Location
Garden Lab’s Residence’s excellent position is just one of its many charms. The delightful machiya is tucked away in a quiet alleyway close to the city’s attractions but still hidden away from the busier thoroughfares to ensure the ultimate peace and tranquility.
The Kamo River, the central waterway of Kyoto, and home to some of the area’s most exciting restaurants and bars, is just a three-minute walk east of Garden Lab, while the scenic town center is just a 10-minute walk north.
For those who want to explore the area on foot, Garden Lab is an ideal choice, as a scenic 20-minute walk east will take you to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kiyomizu-dera, a signature landmark of Kyoto.
For some more outdoor exploration, visit Shosei-en garden, which is just an 15-minute walk away. This garden is situated in the precincts of the historic Higashi Honganji Temple. The garden is a wonderful strolling destination and is home to an impressive selection of cherry blossom trees that are a must-see in spring. Garden Lab also has fantastic access to all major public transportation outlets; it’s 850 meters to Gojo Subway Station and 550 meters to Kiyomizu-Gojo Station on the Keihan Line.
Description
The first floor of the residence is dedicated to living and embracing the Kyoto way of life. On this ground floor, guests will find the living room, dressed in deep earthen tones with natural wood accents and a garden right outside the traditional sliding shoji and glass doors, allowing you to relax and enjoy nature even in the heart of the city.
The large table in the center of the living room is equally great for catching up on some tasks during a workcation or for having a meal while catching up on some of your favorite shows using the provided chromecast to log in to your streaming service accounts. When weather permits, pass the evening in peaceful relaxation with the garden doors open and a cup of tea.
Also on the first floor, you will find the fully stocked kitchen, complete with all the amenities you need to prepare a delicious meal. The IH burner from the kitchen can also be moved to the large living room table to enjoy a hotpot party with your entire group.
With a large deep bath tub and a shower featuring a tastefully modern shower head, the bath and shower of Garden Lab – The Residence are fantastic for washing away the aches and exhaustion after a long day out sightseeing.
Making your way up to the second floor, you will find the primary sleeping area. With stylish tatami mat flooring characteristic of classic machiya houses in Kyoto and plush plush futons, you are sure to enjoy living like the locals in this beautiful house. Opening the windows in the bedroom offer a fantastic view of the courtyard of the complex in which the house is located.
