Overview
Kikou is a private two-storey home in Higashiyama, just south of Gion, offering 63.8 m² of space for up to five guests. Warm timber floors and cabinetry, an open wood-and-black-metal staircase, muted walls, and handcrafted ceramic details give the interiors a contemporary calm rooted in Kyoto craft. Upstairs, two bedrooms contain four semi-double beds, while a first-floor tatami room can be prepared with one futon.
The layout is compact but thoughtfully planned for groups, with a kitchen and dining area for shared meals, a shower and laundry area on the ground floor, and two restrooms – one on each level. The highlight is a private outdoor ceramic bath set in a small stone courtyard, an inviting place to slow down after a day of walking through Higashiyama.
Location
Kikou sits in Higashiyama just south of Gion, making it an excellent base for exploring one of Kyoto’s most atmospheric districts on foot. Traditional streets, temple approaches, and everyday neighborhood scenery begin close to the house, while its residential setting offers a quieter return at the end of the day.
Kiyomizu-Gojo Station on the Keihan Main Line is about a seven-minute walk away. From there, Gion-Shijo and central Kyoto are easy to reach northbound, while Fushimi Inari and the southern side of the city are easily accessible in the opposite direction.
Kiyomizu-dera is about 13 minutes away on foot. Reaching the temple by walking through Higashiyama lets guests enjoy the district at a gentler pace and makes early-morning or evening visits especially convenient.
The lanes around Kiyomizu-dera lead naturally toward Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, where preserved streetscapes, small shops, and cafés capture the character of eastern Kyoto.
Gion’s historic streets are also within easy reach, making it possible to combine temple visits, walks through traditional neighborhoods, and evenings around the Kamo River without relying on a car.
With rail access nearby and major Higashiyama sights within walking distance, Kikou works equally well for first-time Kyoto visitors and returning guests who want a more residential base close to the city’s cultural heart.
Description
From the genkan, the home unfolds into a bright first-floor living and dining space. Wood-grain floors and cabinetry bring warmth, while the slim open staircase in timber and black metal keeps the compact plan visually light. A wall-mounted television and a dining table with bench seating create an easy place to gather.
The kitchen runs along one wall and includes an IH cooktop, refrigerator, microwave, rice cooker, and kettle. Dark wood cabinetry and a pale backsplash continue the home’s clean, understated palette.
Beside the entrance, the tatami room provides a flexible Japanese-style retreat. It can be used as a quiet place to sit during the day and prepared with one futon at night, giving the fifth guest a sleeping area apart from the upstairs bedrooms.
Bathing and laundry facilities are grouped on the ground floor. A generous vanity, combination washer/dryer, and dedicated shower room keep daily routines straightforward, particularly when several guests are getting ready.
Beyond the bathing area, doors open to a private stone courtyard and a round ceramic outdoor tub. Textured dark walls, natural stone paving, and privacy screening create an intimate open-air retreat that feels removed from the city.
Upstairs are two bedrooms, each furnished with two semi-double beds. One uses a warm terracotta accent wall and the other a soft slate-blue palette; both include simple timber bed frames, individual bedside lighting, and open hanging space.
A second restroom upstairs removes the need to use the stairs at night. The wash areas pair modern fixtures with tactile details, including patterned tile, a live-edge timber shelf, and a handcrafted ceramic basin.
Arranged over two levels, Kikou balances shared space with privacy: guests can gather downstairs, spread out between two bedrooms and the tatami room at night, and enjoy a restroom on either floor. Its thoughtful layout and walkable Higashiyama location make it a comfortable Kyoto base for families or small groups.
