Mai House is a second floor apartment in a renovated traditional Kyoto house located in a peaceful, upmarket neighborhood slightly south west of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. In the heart of a neighborhood filled with classic traditional Kyoto houses as well as a wide number of cafes set up in beautiful traditional houses, enjoy a quiet world away from the busy streets of Tokyo and Osaka.
Mai is a lovely second floor, renovated apartment in a traditional wooden Kyoto house located in a peaceful, upmarket neighborhood slightly southwest of the Kyoto Imperial Palace and east of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Nijo castle. Its interior is proudly reminiscent of old-world Kyoto style, while its amenities and creature comforts are stylishly modern. The house’s exterior boasts a classic Kyo-machiya (traditional Kyoto home) design, while the interior blends old and new worlds. With earthy, organic textured walls, thick warm wooden exposed beams, and wooden and tatami mat flooring, Mai’s elegance is a lesson in understated sophistication.
The 45-square-meter, four-person-capacity apartment features two separate bedrooms, one with a single bed and the other with two. There’s an additional spare sofa bed located in the living room for extra guests. Mai also boasts a fully stocked kitchen and a separated shower room and toilet. Designed for livability and to offer guests an authentic Kyoto experience, Mai is a wonderful home that will make any guests’ stay complete.
In Mai’s neighborhood, the streets are lined with classic traditional Kyoto houses, many housing cozy cafes, which with their laid-back, old-world ambiance feel worlds away from the busy streets of Tokyo and Osaka. While the neighborhood is quiet, it’s not far from many of the city’s main attractions. A five-minute ride by subway or taxi will get you to thousands of fantastic dining and drinking options, and the nearest convenience store is a three-minute walk from the house.
It’s also ideally situated in the middle of many of Kyoto’s major tourist destinations like Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kinkakuji, and Fushimi Inari shrine, making it the perfect home base for those wanting to explore Kyoto by rental bicycle.
About a five-minute walk north from Mai is the iconic Kyoto Imperial Palace and the stunning Kyoto Gyoen National Garden that surrounds it. A 15-minute walk east from Mai sits the Kamo River, Kyoto’s most famous and well-trafficked waterway. Along this river, you’ll find many elegant dining establishments with unparalleled water views. On the west side, just 10 minutes by foot, is the historic UNESCO World Heritage-recognized Nijo Castle, surrounded by Nijo Park, a laid-back Japanese-style garden complete with cherry blossom trees that come alive in the spring.

The combination living and dining room is the first room to greet guests as they arrive, and this space sets the mood of the home. Fully equipped and elegantly compact, the kitchen offers all the amenities you’d need to whip up a feast on a cozy night in.
The living room also features a large coffee-dining table hybrid, with additional zabuton (Japanese floor cushions), so guests can sit around the table, classic Japanese style, and enjoy their meals in comfort. Also in the living room is a plush sofa, perfect for sinking into while enjoying Netflix on the 55-inch TV. The living room features shoji-style sliding window covers, allowing soft, diffused natural light to grace the space. The shower room and toilet are also separated to ensure complete privacy.
The two bedrooms are separated by a fusuma (Japanese sliding doors), giving guests the option for communal or private sleeping arrangements. All the western-style single beds feature lush bedding sheets to ensure the ultimate comfort. The larger of the two rooms, which features two single beds, also has tatami mat flooring, making the space feel warm and creating classic Kyoto charm and ambiance.

From Kansai International Airport
The easiest way to get to Kyoto Station from the airport is the JR Haruka Limited Express Haruka Line. It takes 1 hour and 18 minutes. Kyoto Station is the fourth stop.
From Kyoto Station to Mai
Take the Subway Karasuma Line from Kyoto Station to Marutamachi Station (4 stops; 7 mins). From there it is 4 mins walk to the property.
