Overview
Meigetsu is a cozy and charming Kyoto retreat that offers the perfect blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern comforts. Designed to accommodate up to four guests, the house provides a flexible layout that caters to both relaxation and functionality. The highlight of the home is its versatile tatami living room, which can be used as a lounging space during the day or transformed into a sleeping area with futons at night. Upstairs, a serene bedroom with two comfortable single beds combines Western-style bedding with traditional Japanese elements like tatami flooring and fusuma doors, creating a harmonious and restful environment.
Nestled in a peaceful neighborhood near Nishi Honganji, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Meigetsu is ideally located for exploring Kyoto’s historic treasures and cultural landmarks. With easy access to major train lines and cycling routes, the property serves as an excellent base for experiencing both the city and the surrounding Kansai region. Whether you’re admiring the architecture of Kyoto’s iconic temples, strolling along the Kamogawa River, or heading to easily accessible destinations like Arashiyama or Osaka, Meigetsu provides a serene and convenient home away from home.
Location
Meigetsu is located just a 10-minute walk from Nishi Honganji, one of Kyoto’s most celebrated UNESCO World Heritage sites. This historic temple is a masterpiece of traditional Japanese architecture, featuring intricate wood carvings, stunning golden details, and expansive tatami-lined halls. Visitors can marvel at the grandeur of the Founder’s Hall (Goei-do) and the Amida Hall (Amida-do), both of which reflect the deep spiritual and cultural heritage of Kyoto. A short distance from Nishi Honganji lies its sister temple, Higashi Honganji, which is equally impressive with its massive wooden structures and tranquil gardens. Together, these temples offer a profound glimpse into the history of Pure Land Buddhism and the artistry of the Edo period.
Meigetsu is also close to several transport hubs, making it an excellent base for exploring Kyoto and beyond. Tambaguchi Station on the JR San-in Line is just a 12-minute walk away, providing easy access to Kyoto Station and nearby destinations such as Osaka, Nara, Shiga, and Hyogo. For those looking to venture westward, Omiya Station is a 15-minute walk and connects to the Hankyu Line for Osaka and the Randen tram for the scenic Arashiyama area. Guests who prefer to explore the city at their own pace can rent bicycles to reach the Kamogawa River and its surrounding attractions, offering a scenic and active way to experience Kyoto’s charm.
Meigetsu’s location strikes an ideal balance between accessibility and tranquility. From iconic temples to convenient transport links, the house provides an excellent starting point for any Kyoto adventure, allowing guests to experience the city’s rich culture and natural beauty with ease.
Description
As you step into Meigetsu, you’re greeted by a welcoming genkan, a traditional Japanese entryway designed for removing and storing shoes. Straight ahead lies the kitchen, a practical and well-equipped space perfect for preparing meals during your stay. To the left of the genkan, a small tatami room sits at the base of the stairs, creating an inviting space that blends traditional Japanese design with flexibility. Moving through the kitchen, you’ll find the main living room, separated by elegant shoji doors. This tatami living room doubles as a lounging area with a low table and bean bags or, with the furniture moved aside, transforms into a sleeping area with two futons.
At the back of the house is the washroom, which features a ceiling window that bathes the space in natural light. The washroom includes separate washer and dryer units, ensuring convenience for longer stays. Adjacent to the washroom is the restroom, while on the opposite side, guests can enjoy a spacious shower equipped with a luxurious rainfall shower head, offering a refreshing experience after a day of exploring.
Heading back to the entryway and crossing the tatami room, you’ll find yourself at the base of the stairs leading to the second floor. Upstairs, the serene bedroom features two comfortable single beds set on tatami flooring, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern convenience. Fusuma doors and other Japanese design elements enhance the room’s charm, while the Western-style beds provide the comfort of home.
