Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival 2026: Japan’s Legendary Winter Ritual
Each winter, as deep snow settles across the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, the hot spring village of Nozawa Onsen prepares for one of Japan’s most powerful and visually arresting traditions. Held every year on January 15th, the Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival, known locally as the Dosojin Matsuri, draws firelight into the heart of winter, uniting ancient belief, community strength, and dramatic alpine scenery.
Designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, the festival remains firmly rooted in village life. Residents plan, build, and carry out every stage themselves, preserving rituals that have endured for centuries while welcoming visitors to observe respectfully from the sidelines.
